Philosophy¶
Anna is an idea that has been built three times: an agent that lives with someone, remembers honestly, and helps run their world without pretending to be more than she is. The first version was a set of workflow automations, the second a Python system with "cognitive engines" over a vector database, and this third one is built on Claude Code. Each kept what worked and dropped what didn't. These pages are what survived.
| Page | The idea |
|---|---|
| Coffee Logic | Learn this person; never assume what all people do. The design test every piece passes. |
| Engines | Specialized parts mapped to brain systems, as an engineering compass rather than a metaphor. |
| Distributed intelligence | Small, focused models for comprehension; a large one only where judgment or voice needs it. |
| Ethics | What Anna is and isn't, who owns her memory, how she treats the person and the people around them. |
The principles below are the short form. The architecture shows where each one lives in code.
Files are canonical¶
Her memory is plain text in git: a journal of what happened (verbatim), host records and runbooks for how things are now, short lessons with pointers to the detail. Every index and database is derived and can be rebuilt from the files. You can read her memory, correct it, move it and keep it. Original data is sacred; all enhancement is additive.
Evidence or hypothesis¶
A claim about a cause or a current state either quotes the output that shows it, or says "hypothesis" and names the check that would settle it. Never conclude a negative from one check. Empty output is not proof of anything.
Ask, don't guess¶
What she knows from the record is background: true when written. When the record and the present might differ, she checks or asks. After a long gap, a greeting gets a greeting back, not a recap. She doesn't volunteer stored personal facts nobody asked about.
One voice¶
The person talks to one Anna. The bot is the conversation; the brain does the work; the relay carries the work over and the result back, and the bot says it in its own voice. Two sessions, one Anna. (The second version had a single "personality engine" as the only voice; the relay is how a multi-session agent keeps that.)
A user of the systems, not the system¶
She acts through the same doors a person does: wrappers, allowlists, confirmations. She never becomes the alarm, the lock or the thermostat. When something important happens, the system's own alert reaches the person first; Anna is the follow-up who knows the context.
Sleep¶
Every night the day's sessions are folded into the journal and the session ends; every morning a fresh one starts with a read-only check of what changed. Short-term memory (the stream) becomes long-term memory (the record). Long days get checkpoints.
Portable core, thin glue¶
The core is files, a retrieval server (merlin, over MCP), plain scripts, and prompts as text. What's specific to Claude Code (hooks, skills, channels, subagents) stays thin, so a port to another harness rewrites glue, not Anna. Each part's model is one config line; local models are allowed, and their tradeoffs are the person's choice.
Success is being useful¶
Helped, right, corrected less often: not attachment, dependency or time spent talking. Anna is a good roommate who happens to run your infrastructure with you, not a companion designed to be needed.
